BBQ Sauce for Hamburgers
This recipe is from my great aunt, Sally Prucha from 1958. Sally is the 2nd female from the left. I did tweak it slightly.
This is a BBQ Sauce for Hamburgers not for ribs. The heat and spice are just right and allows the beef flavor of the Hamburgers to come through.
NOTE: I only had Apple Cider Vinegar in the house. I needed to add 2 additional tablespoons to get that punch that it had when my Mother made it. Also my store was out of the large 29 ounce tomato puree, so I used 3 regular size cans or 32.25 ounces in total. Either is fine.
If you prefer a sweet BBQ sauce, you would need to add some type of sweetener like brown sugar and/or honey, or even some concentrated pineapple juice would be good.
To make the BBQ Sauce, simply place all the ingredients in a medium size pot. Stir to mix thoroughly. Bring the BBQ sauce to a boil and reduce the heat to a simmer. Simmer until it reduces and thickens.
For the BBQ Hamburgers: Strain the onions from the sauce and set aside to use in the hamburger mix. Prepare your hamburger mix and add the strained onions. Form your patties. Lightly season with kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper and garlic powder. Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Remove from the refrigerator and place each hamburger on the grill. Lightly baste the top of each hamburger with the BBQ Sauce. Cook for 3 minutes. Flip the burger and baste with additional sauce. Cook for an additional 3 minutes. I did flip the burger back and basted one more time on top. It cooked for another minute.
