Mixed Spice (British)
Mixed Spice is a famous British spice blend that is typically used around Christmas. It can be used in sweet and savory dishes. I use it in several dishes, including Soul Cakes.
Mixed Spice is a British blend of sweet spices, similar to a pumpkin pie or gingerbread spice blend in the United States.
Cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg are the dominant spices. It also contains ground cloves, coriander, caraway and ginger. Recipes vary and historically cayenne pepper was added.
You can either purchase Mixed Spice online (see photo showing two brands) or make your own as I have done here. I still need to grind the caraway seeds which can be done in a mortar and pestle or a coffee/spice grinder. Simply blend all the spices together and mix well. Store in a sealed jar away from the light.
