Poached Pears

My cousins, Guy and Teri, were kind enough to give me some pears from their Green Anjou Pear tree in their yard.   I couldn’t resist making some Poached Pears with some vanilla, honey and warm fall spices.  This recipe is very easy to make and they make a great side dish.

Teri and Guy

What you will need for this recipe:

12 small to medium sized Green Anjou Pears, peeled, thick slices or chunks
6 1/2 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar
2-3 tablespoons honey (I had Orange Blossom Honey)
1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste
2 cinnamon sticks
1 star anise

1st Batch

Peel 8 pears and slice them into thick slices or chunks.  In a medium size pot, add the water, granulated sugar, honey, vanilla bean paste, cinnamon sticks and star anise.  Stir over medium-high heat until the sugar is dissolved. Add the pear slices and/or chunks. Bring to a boil for 5-7 minutes. Reduce the heat and allow to simmer. This will make a light syrup. Cook until the pears are fork tender and they have absorbed the flavor of the syrup, approximately 45 minutes.

Strain the pears and serve immediately or place in a ziploc container to store in the refrigerator.

Poached Pears Cooking

Poached Pears

After I poached my pears in a light syrup, I had 4 pears left.  I peeled and sliced the remaining pears into thick cuts and put them in the poaching liquid that was left.  I turned the heat back up and boiled them until the remaining syrup started to reduce.  Then turned the heat down and simmered them until the pears almost became like candy with a thick syrup.  I mixed some of these together with the poached pears and will use the rest as a topping for ice cream.
